Our 1981 R182 developed a grand oil leak last month. I flew the airplane to the radio shop for some upgrades, and they sent me a disturbing video of oil coming out by the right exhaust when they ran up the engine to verify that the new radio works properly. OH. MY.
Back story. We bought our R182 in ...

Re: Corroded NLG actuator rod caused loss of hydraulic fluid
I had to replace our NG actuator a few years ago. The actuator does not have a scraper to keep dirt away from the seal o-ring, so any dirt or dust that collects on the oily shaft gets deposited on the first obstruction it comes to, which is the outer o-ring. The abrasive dirt then works on the shaft ...

Air intake duct seal material
After reading an article here about the many ways our R182 engine air system can be flawed. I started inspecting mine today.
First thing I noticed was that the seal that should be between the inlet duct on the left upper cowl and the air filter is MIA.
Hmmm. The part number in the IPC is S1047-3 ...

Re: Adding a gear pump light?
I added a gear-pump-on light to our 1981 R182. The contactor failed (contacts welded shut) so the pump stayed on until the circuit breaker tripped. My partner called to let me know that the pump turned on ON THE GROUND [i.e. with the squat switch open].

Re: CHT's for the Lyc O-540
I normally aim for CHTs between 360 and 380 in cruise. Normally see that in cruise with the cowl flaps closed. That's at a typical power around 70 to 72%, and fuel flow a little under 12 gph. If I'm al low altitude I try to reduce RPM to 2300 or even 2200, and make up the power with manifold ...
