Observed True Air Speed - What speeds are you seeing?

Post by scottrsellers »

On trip last week at 9500’ making 23” MP @ 2350 RPM, 50F LOP at about 13gph we were seeing high 150s to low 160s TAS. Engine is IO540(300hp) making approx. 60% power. See more details in Trip Talk section.

Scott, how did you get the headwind and crosswind components to each display on your 2nd G5?

I have two G5's as well set up like you with the top as an AI and the bottom as an HSI, but my HSI just shows total wind direction and speed.

Todd, Not sure on the #2 G5 wind reporting set up. The installing shop configured and we’ve not changed it. Will look into further after the holidays and let you know.

Todd - I asked our area Garmin dealer the above question on G5 wind display setup. He asked if you have OAT & GAD(29?) installed and guessed you do not since both are required to display wind data.

What is the GAD 29 you might ask? Here's Garmin's description:
"The GAD 29C is an affordable ARINC 429 avionics data bus module that can be used to interface up to 2 IFR-capable GPS navigators with the G3X, G3X Touch and G5 series electronic flight displays. It can also be used to adapt the GTX 800 series active traffic system for use with G3X and G3X Touch displays.
This compact GPS/navigation data adapter, when installed with the GTN 750 or GTN 650 series or legacy GNS 530 or GNS 430 navigators, can enable such advanced features as GPS steering, WAAS LPV vertical approach guidance, HSI map navigation, coupled VNAV and more for access via your compatible flight display system."

Interesting they omit listing the GNX 375 navigator/ADS-B/XPDR solution above which is how we use the G5/GAD29 package. Aircraft Spruce sells the GAD 29 for $550.00 https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... -11454.php

Hi Scott,

Sounds like your Garmin dealer does not understand the question. Hi do have the GAD29 and I do have Wind reading.

The nuance is my G5's simply display "Wind" and the speed. That's it.

Yours however displays further stratification of the wind broken down in to the "crosswind" component displayed as "XW" on your display and the headwind component displayed as "HW" on your display.

Trying to figure out what makes the G5/GAD29 display both wind components, vs, the overall. Is it a software setting or a software version?

Hopefully that makes sense to your dealer. I will ask my shop as well.

Maybe this is the answer: "So today I checked my G5 HSI to see why it shows wind data as direction and speed rather than headwind and crosswind components as in the photo from an OP. Turns out all I had to do was scroll the HSI to the setup page (in flight) and select wind data in headwind/cross wind mode!!! That way I can still do a PIREP using direction and speed while being able to check optimum altitude in terms of headwind/crosswind as well as during landings..."

Interesting - will check the G5 HSI Setup page next time while in cruise to see what options look like. Our Garmin dealer says he'll check the install manual and advise as well.
